"Christians saved me from the Nazis... now I must save them from an even greater evil"

Powerful, eloquent and utterly gripping... Jewish peer, 96, on his mission to stop IS massacre of innocents

"I travelled to Zurich in the comfort of a first-class carriage but from the moment I arrived, I was a refugee without a home, food or resources.
A refugee committee gave me something to eat and onward passage.
With their help I decided to try for Paris and then London, though I’d never been to either.
It was August 8 when I landed at Dover. In my pocket I had 16 shillings and sixpence and a permit to stay in England for just three months.

In London I was billeted in a desperate boarding house in King’s Cross, surviving on a handout of £2 a week.
I had some letters of introduction but they were useless beyond providing me with free meals; I would trudge from party to party stuffing myself with food.

I travelled to Zurich in the comfort of a first-class carriage but from the moment I arrived, I was a refugee without a home, food or resources.

Yet here I am, now 96, chairman of Weidenfeld & Nicolson, the publishing house I founded, a peer of the realm, a man who has been counsellor to heads of state, a Jew privileged to count himself as a friend of a crusading Pope.
And I owe all this to one act of Christian charity. In my time of greatest need, a family of evangelical Christians, Plymouth Brethren, took me in. They gave me a bed and put meals on the table.
They supported me in my studies and in my work. And when my father was released from prison in 1939 the Brethren vouched for my parents at the Home Office and they too found sanctuary in London."
