Hundreds of Nigerian Asylum Seekers Missing in Netherlands

Afbeelding
AMSTERDAM - A group of investigative reporters says almost half of Nigerian asylum seekers arriving in the Netherlands last year disappeared. It is believed that many fell victim to human traffickers who forced them into prostitution or drug trafficking across the European Union. A European journalism collective says of the 2,461 Nigerians seeking asylum in the Netherlands in 2019, 961 cannot be located. Another 128 Nigerians who arrived in January of this year also disappeared, according to an investigation by the journalist group Lost in Europe.   Continue: https://www.voanews.com/africa/hundreds-nigerian-asylum-seekers-missing-netherlands Interessant artikel? Home on the Move: the Impact of Immigration Policy on Participation and the Possibilities for Practice

by Ruth Webber Tuesday 25 June 2019, 11:00 - 13:30 Ruth Webber’s PhD research explored the meaning and importance of ‘home’ to migrants, refugees and asylum seekers living in Glasgow, with a particular focus on the impact of hostile environment policies and legal status. This workshop presents findings from her research and will foster a reflective space, asking: “What are the barriers faced by cultural institutions to supporting the participation of those living under the hostile environment, and what can cultural institutions do to develop their inclusive practices in this field?”. Refreshments will be provided. Landeninformatie beschikbaar bij Asylos

Afbeelding
Asylos is a pan-European network of volunteers researching information for asylum claims. The Asylos network’s volunteer researchers work to ensure that every asylum seeker has a fair opportunity to claim his or her right to protection. Evidence to prove persecution or to support the credibility of an individual testimony is a vital element in decisions taken to grant or withhold asylum. Still, many refugees and their legal representatives cannot access this information. As a result, our legal system fails to protect them. To redress this imbalance and protect the right to asylum we work to: ensure that asylum seekers and their legal counsel have access to crucial sources and data to substantiate their claim We believe that refugees and their counsel should have equal access to information and sufficient resources to conduct the needed research. Those helping to defend asylum seekers’ rights face great difficulties when researching information: it often requires und...

The ECtHR’s Ilias and Ahmed v. Hungary and Why It Matters

"While the Ilias and Ahmed v. Hungary judgment doesn’t break any new ground with respect to the Court’s reading of the law, it is probably one of the Court’s more important recent cases in light of its broader implications, political as well as legal. First of all, the Court’s analysis of the new situation in Hungary following the legislative amendments of 2015 effectively calls into question the legality of Dublin returns to that country along the lines of M.S.S. v. Belgium and Greece (in case anyone was really still wondering if it was alright to send asylum-seekers back to Hungary). Furthermore, by analysing the conditions and asylum system of Serbia and determining the existence of a real risk of violations of Art. 3 in case of forced return there (particularly with respect to the possibility of chain refoulement), the Court actually sent a very clear message to the Serbian authorities themselves, giving local civil society a new resource to draw upon when confronting state of...

Migrant crisis: The smugglers' route through Hungary

Afbeelding
Do you see the migrants as victims or criminals, I ask Lt Col Zoltan Boross of the Hungarian police. Chief commander in the war against illegal migrants for the past 23 years, he stares over my head at a map of south-eastern Europe scarred by the thick brown arrows which migrants leave on the orderly geography of police forces. "I see them as witnesses against the smugglers," he says. The migrant route across Hungary has reopened this year, as borders through the Balkans to Austria have become harder to cross. At least 12,000 migrants have broken through the infamous razor wire fence on Hungary's southern border with Serbia this year. Most are caught within hours by the army of policemen and soldiers patrolling the Hungarian side. "Unfortunately most tell fairy tales," says Lt Col Boross. "They think if they give evidence, they won't get he...

Greece Under Strain As Migrant Deal Takes Effect

Authorities in Greece are struggling to put in place infrastructure to implement the deal signed by EU leaders and Turkey in Brussels to stem the flow of migrants. From today, all "irregular migrants" who arrive in Greece will be sent back to Turkey. However the process of the 'turn-backs', as they are known, will not actually begin for several weeks at least. Speaking to Sky News, an official from the Greek government's crisis management office said the challenges were huge. "If we had to do it today, we wouldn't be able to do it. There are things that have to be done before we are ready to implement a deal like this," Giorgos Kyritsis said. "We are talking days in terms of the legal procedures. We have to make many legislation arrangements and then we have to make the infrastructure and that is a matter of weeks, not months." Under the turn-back deal signed in Brussels on Friday, Turkey agreed to take back all irr...

Refugee crisis: Afghanistan ruled safe enough to deport asylum-seekers from UK

Afbeelding
Hundreds of failed asylum-seekers, including former child migrants, are to be sent back to Afghanistan after the Court of Appeal ruled that deportations can be resumed. A blanket ban on deportations back to the war-ravaged country was imposed in August last year amid concerns that it was too dangerous. Swathes of territory are controlled by the Taliban, and Isis is establishing a foothold. But Home Secretary Theresa May won a significant legal battle to restart the flights – even though last year was the bloodiest on record for civilian casualties in the country. According to leaked documents obtained by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, even the Afghan government pleaded with the UK not to resume deportations.  More here: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/refugee-crisis-afghanistan-ruled-safe-enough-to-deport-asylum-seekers-from-uk-a6910246.html Interessant artikel? Walgelijk artikel "Who remembers Aylan Kurdi now?" (Updated)

The year of the migrant / het jaar van de migrant

Afbeelding
From drownings in the Mediterranean to the mass movement of people across Europe's borders, 2015 was the year the migrant crisis dominated the headlines. Here we look back on that year T his was the year a million people mired in violence and poverty stopped waiting for help from the rich world, and instead set off to make a new life there. Europe was unprepared and largely unwilling to accept them and, challenged to live up to its lofty ideals, much of the planet’s wealthiest continent responded with fear, anger and efforts to move the new arrivals on or keep them out entirely. Thousands of people risked their lives almost every day to reach Europe, just as the stability and freedom they sought there were shaken by recrimination between neighbouring states, terror attacks, and a rush to rebuild border fences. As with the 2008 financial crash, and subsequent travai...

Powerful, eloquent and utterly gripping... With their help I decided to try for Paris and then London, though I’d never been to either.  It was August 8 when I landed at Dover. In my pocket I had 16 shillings and sixpence and a permit to stay in England for just three months.  In London I was billeted in a desperate boarding house in King’s Cross, surviving on a handout of £2 a week. I had some letters of introduction but they were useless beyond ...

Eye-witnesses claim that less than a third of migrants who have already reached Germany, or are on their way there, are from Syria

Eye-witnesses claim that less than a third of migrants who have already reached Germany, or are on their way there, are from Syria   In Berlin, Mohammad and Ismail told me less than a third of migrants in Germany, or on their way there, are from Syria. When I questioned this astonishing claim, they insisted they were right, calling over three friends who had travelled with them, who all said the same. Concerned about a misunderstanding, although their English is good, I drew a pie chart and asked them to mark on it the percentage of migrants arriving in Germany who are genuinely Syrian. Mohammad, watched by the others, took my pen and clearly drew a line showing they really did mean 30 per cent. If these young men are right, it makes a laughing stock of Mrs Merkel’s grandiose open-door plan. Ismail said: ‘In our reception centre there are many, including the three Sudanese girls, who pretend to be from our country. Yet these people have different hair, diff...

Zie in De Telegraaf: http://www.telegraaf.nl/buitenland/24061275/___EU-landen__meteen_iets_doen___.html De Franse minister van immigratie: Harlem Désir: 'Refugee status is a competency of the member states' http://www.euractiv.com/sections/development-policy/harlem-desir-refugee-status-competency-member-states-314658 Britain rejects migrant resettlement plan http://www.euractiv.com/sections/justice-home-affairs/britain-rejects-migrant-resettlement-plan-314530 EU migrant quota plan in tatters after France and Spain join British opposition French president François Holland...

GORE smeerlap!

'You could tell he was lying. He kept forgetting his fake name': Rescuers describe moment they confronted migrant ship captain and how they're haunted by red eyes of dead in 'cemetery on the sea' Doctor Giuseppe Pomilla and nurse Enrico Vitiello, of the Order of Malta (left) said they were haunted by the sea of 'red eyes' from dead bodies during the rescue. Dr Pomilla said he confronted Tunisian skipper Mohammed Ali Malek (right) when he saw him on the rescue ship and accused him of being the trafficker. He claims Malek, who has since been arrested for multiple manslaughter, lied about who he was and gave a fake name. Nurse Vitiello, (bel...

Indonesia bristles over 'deplorable' Australian sea incursions

(Reuters) - Indonesia will increase maritime patrols after what it called deplorable territorial violations by Australia's navy as it tried to turn back asylum seekers, worsening an already bitter dispute between the two neighbors over the issue. Earlier on Friday, Australia apologized for a number of recent incursions into Indonesian waters as part of Canberra's controversial policy of pushing back boats carrying would-be asylum seekers entering its side of the sea. (...) Abbott's government is also coming under fire at home over the secrecy surrounding its "Operation Sovereign Borders" asylum policy, which he recently likened to a war. He has said secrecy is important to prevent "the enemy" receiving information. On Wednesday, Morrison moved to restrict access to information even further as he touted the operation's success, refusing to confirm reports that the navy had forced the return of a number of boats to Indonesia in...
