VACATURE: (Junior) Researcher in public international law

The T.M.C. Asser Instituut is a research centre for international and European law. Its mission is to contribute to the development of international and European law by conducting independent fundamental research, policy-oriented research, and applied legal research, as well as by initiating and facilitating academic and expert meetings, (professional) education, and public events with a view to disseminating knowledge of international and European law. The Institute is dedicated to building a strong research community and creating an environment that facilitates critical-constructive reflection.

The Institute is looking for a:
(Junior) Researcher in public international law
Full-time (38 hours per week) for a period of six months (covering maternity leave)

to support research in the fields of international human rights law, counter-terrorism and human rights, international humanitarian law, and international criminal law. S/He will report directly to the Academic Director.

Required qualifications, knowledge and skills

  • A Master of Laws (LL.M) degree in public international law;
  • Knowledge of counter-terrorism and human rights, international humanitarian law and international criminal law;
  • Strong research and analytical skills;
  • Excellent writing, reporting, editing and presentation skills;
  • Excellent command of the English language. Knowledge of other languages is appreciated;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively;
  • A collaborative and supportive approach to teamwork and the ability to perform well under the stress of deadlines;

Specific duties and responsibilities

In the field of counter-terrorism and human rights, and in cooperation with the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism – The Hague (ICCT): Independent and team work including preparing policy papers, (co)organising expert meetings, conducting research etc. most notably on legal questions with respect to foreign fighters and armed drones.

In the field of international humanitarian law: (Co)editing a volume of the Yearbook of International Humanitarian Law and preparing the publication of the ‘Year in Review’ for this Yearbook.

Coordinating, (co)organising and moderating lectures in the context of the Hague Initiative for Law and Armed Conflict.

In the field of international criminal law:
Coordinating, (co)organising and moderating lectures in the context of the Supranational Criminal Law Lecture Series;

Supervision of interns working on the International Crimes Database (ICD); identifying and securing authors for ICD Briefs; reviewing ICD Briefs; assisting in the acquisition of ICD funding; working on the ICD’s social media dimension;

Editorial work, acquisition of funding and participation in research activities where needed.

Conditions:
  • Temporary employment for a period of 6 months.
  • Salary scale: 10 according to the collective labour agreement of the Dutch Universities (VSNU). Remuneration depends on the actual level of education, experience and knowledge with a maximum of € 2476,-- gross per month based on a full time equivalent (38 hours).
