Rubalcaba underscores that the EU guarantees the basic rights of illegal immigrants

The Spanish Minister for Home Affairs, Alfred Pérez Rubalcaba, stressed that the European Union guarantees certain rights to all persons, including illegal immigrants.

In statements made to the press after a meeting with Euro-deputies in Brussels, Rubalcaba stressed that ‘it is one thing to combat illegal immigration at borders’ and another thing ‘inside each country’.

‘I do not know whether they are registered or not, but it is a fact that Europe assists the children of illegal immigrants, he underscored.

Hence, ‘the registration of residence is an essential municipal tool, enabling us to ascertain essential information such as how many children must receive schooling or how many persons receive public health care’, said the minister
