Kuwait’s parliament works on the project of legislation based on which the government would like to offer certain skilled expatriates and their families Kuwaiti citizenship. The purpose of this new law is to increase number of highly qualified workers, who in turn can help to expand the country’s economy.
Dr Sami Alfaraj, president of the Kuwait Center for Strategic Studies commented on the plan to ArabianBusiness.com, emphasizing the need for expatriates to speed up the development of its economy.
Kuwait has a shortage of highly qualified professional workers outside of the oil sector and hopes to attract such foreigners into the country with a new proposed citizenship program. Details of the program have yet to be revealed.
Currently the oil industry is the major sector employing expatriates in Kuwait. By introducing the citizenship program the government intends to diversify the labor market.
In another attempt to welcome foreign workers, Kuwait is also planning to scrap its criticized sponsorship system. Authorities have yet to confirm how the system will be replaced.
