Introduction
My name is Bertho Smit. I’m a qualified Dutch and English teacher with decades of experience teaching a wide range of levels, from basic to highly educated, from inburgering-lessons to lessons for expats.
Leiden, my city
Leiden is a beautiful, fun and thriving city. There’s a good atmosphere (or as we say in Dutch – gezellig), a historic centre and a friendly population. I’ve been living in Leiden for many years and I’m proud to call it my hometown. I know many people and places and, in the course of Dutch learning, can introduce both to my students.
Learning Dutch is a mindset
I work at language-schools in Leiden and do private lessons at home. A nice combination. Besides the methods/books I use, I also create my own material for the lessons. My view on language-learning: learning a language is much more than studying grammar rules and doing exercises; the most important factor is that students dare to make mistakes, dare to take a risk. In other words: have a lot of language-contacts with Dutch people, watch tv and listen to the radio. Talk to your neighbours, they might not be as boring as you thought.. Go for it! Neither your talent nor your intelligence will do it for you; your mindset will be your most important asset.

If you are interested, we can do a free intake-session, to find out more about your goals, your level and your preferences.
Rates in short
Private lessons: 45,00 per hour. A lesson of 1 1/2 hours: 62, 50 euro
Lessons in pairs: 27,50 per hour. Weekly lesson takes two hours (55, 00)
Procedures:
Private lessons
I can offer you individual lessons Rates: 45,00 per hour. 10 lessons: 425,00. Or individual lessons of 1,5 hours (which is more common): 65,00. A set of 10 lessons (1,5 hours) will cost 625,00.
Again, after the intake-session, we will choose a book or method. We will start with a first lesson after which you decide whether to join or not. At that moment you pay for the complete set of 10 lessons. After these first 10 lessons, you can sign up (of course) for the next set of 10 lessons.
For special, individual training courses that demand more teacher´s preparations, rates can be different from rates mentioned above.
Lessons in pairs
Studying with two (duo-lessons) is an interesting, new, possibility: Lessons in pairs are of course cheaper than individual lessons, and more focussed on your individual needs than any grouplesson can be. Rates: 27,50 per hour. A lesson takes two hours, once a week. Costs 55,00 per lesson. Each ´in pairs´ student takes part for at least 10 lessons. Costs: 550,-. Lessons take place at my house or yours (if you live in Leiden).
After the intake-session, I will look for a fellow student, who has more or less the same level that you have. We decide about the book we will use. We will start with a first lesson after which you decide whether to join or not. At that moment you pay for the complete set of 10 lessons. After these first 10 lessons, you can sign up (of course) for the next set of 10 lessons.

Expensive? No, not really. And you will learn the language much faster than in any group-course.
Levels
Anyone between A0 – B2 is welcome. (B1 is level NT2-1/Staatsexamen 1) Absolute beginners, don´t hesitate. I will guide you through the first obstacles and your self confidence will grow very soon.
Taalmaatje
If needed I can also help you to find a taalmaatje (volunteer) who will speak Dutch with you on a regular basis.
