Vacature Radboud University Nijmegen - Two PhD Candidates: Caring for Diversity
As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to the NWO-funded VIDI project ’Caring for diversity: meeting care needs of migrant and LGBT elderly in changing care landscapes’. You should be interested in using a qualitative research approach with an explicit action research component, and be eager to develop your knowledge of social theory.
The starting point for this project is the decentralisation of elderly care to the local level. The aim is to understand the scope for developing care practices that are responsive to the care needs and ageing experiences of migrant and LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) elderly in cities and neighbourhoods.
Project 1: Migrant elderly
The project on migrant elderly will investigate culturally sensitive forms of elderly care that existed in a city or neighbourhood prior to decentralisation, what has changed, and what solutions to reinvigorate attention to diversity are being developed. Special attention will be paid to emerging new combinations of professional or informal care that may suit the preferences of both migrant elderly and their children.
Project 2: LGBT elderly
The project on LGBT elderly will investigate to what extent local policies and practices with regard to sexual diversity existed prior to decentralisation, such as LGBT friendly care homes. It will further look at how decentralisation has affected these policies and practices, and what initiatives are being taken to provide elderly care that is sensitive to sexual diversity. The emphasis will be on equal treatment, visibility, and social support networks.

Nijmegen School of Management
The Nijmegen School of Management (NSM) is an academic centre of research and higher learning, focusing on institutional and managerial issues within complex organizations in both the public and private domain. There are seven focus areas within the NSM: Business Administration, Public Administration, Political Science, Economics, Human Geography, Spatial Planning, and Social and Political Sciences of the Environment. The NSM strives for a multidisciplinary approach whenever possible. Altogether, the NSM employs 220 full-time staff, of whom 75% are academics. Both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are offered in the seven fields of study, which are organized in the NSM’s educational institute. The educational programme is based on a system of small-scale teaching and provides a stimulating learning environment with an emphasis on the development of academic skills. The Nijmegen School of Management has about 3,000 students. The NSM’s research activities are governed by the Institute for Management Research (IMR), which has the equivalent of 80 full-time staff members. It focuses on fundamental and applied research on the development, design and effectiveness of the public and private structures that regulate, govern or manage human interaction. The IMR’s research has six ‘hotspots’ or multidisciplinary groups of research. The above-mentioned projects are closely related to research carried out within the hot spots Gender and Power in Politics and Management and Governance and Innovation in Social Services (GAINS) (see IMR's website for more information).
