The Manchester International Roots Orchestra taped a free concert for Refugee Week

Afbeelding
The Manchester International Roots Orchestra (MIRO) is a unique ensemble of musicians with roots from across the world, including refugee musicians. The musicians of MIRO will come together digitally to perform their characteristic blend of music from across the globe. In this performance, recorded during lockdown, MIRO will present well-loved classics from their repertoire which skilfully combines diverse musical influences from haunting Eastern European melodies, to the delicate textures of Middle Eastern percussion and vocals.

Privatized Pushbacks: How the EU and Libya Use Merchant Ships to Block Migrant Boats

Reporting by Patrick Kingsley, New York Times: “[O]ne day a few months ago the Libyan Coast Guard ordered [a German merchant ship] to divert course, rescue 68 migrants in distress in the Mediterranean and return them to Libya, which is embroiled in civil war. The request, which the [merchant ship] was required to honor, was at least the third time that day, Jan. 11, that the Libyans had called on a merchant ship to assist migrants. The Libyans could easily have alerted a nearby rescue ship run by a Spanish charity. The reason they did not goes to the core of how the European authorities have found a new way to thwart desperate African migrants trying to reach their shores from across the Mediterranean. And some maritime lawyers think the...

Steve Peers: The new EU law on refugees takes shape: More Harmonisation but Less Protection?

Afbeelding
Steve Peers Professor of EU Law and Human Rights Law at University of Essex - Law Department and Human Rights Centre wrote: "The new EU law on defining refugees is moving towards adoption. Will it lead to more harmonisation, but lower standards of protection? My analysis: The new EU law on refugees takes shape: More Harmonisation but Less Protection? Professor Steve Peers At the heart of the contested issue of asylum in the EU – including the current perceived ‘refugee/migrant crisis’ – is the definition of who is a ‘refugee’, or is at least entitled instead to a form of ‘subsidiary protection’ for those fleeing threats of ‘serious harm’. Refugees and people with subsidiary protection receive more legal protection and status than many other non-EU citizens, in particular irregular migrants. Unsurprisingly then, the proposed revision of the EU legislation on this issue forms part of the broader overhaul of all EU asylum laws proposed in 2016, as a response to...

Vacature Radboud University Nijmegen - Two PhD Candidates: Caring for Diversity

As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to the NWO-funded VIDI project ’Caring for diversity: meeting care needs of migrant and LGBT elderly in changing care landscapes’. You should be interested in using a qualitative research approach with an explicit action research component, and be eager to develop your knowledge of social theory. The starting point for this project is the decentralisation of elderly care to the local level. The aim is to understand the scope for developing care practices that are responsive to the care needs and ageing experiences of migrant and LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) elderly in cities and neighbourhoods. Project 1: Migrant elderly The project on migrant elderly will investigate culturally sensitive forms of elderly care that existed in a city or neighbourhood prior to decentralisation, what has changed, and what solutions to reinvigorate attention to diversity are being developed. Special attention will be paid to ...

Kennismigranten: More flexibility for highly skilled migrants looking for a new job

As of July 1 2016, it has become easier for highly skilled migrants to switch to a new employer (with recognized sponsorship) after becoming unemployed: They will be granted a 3 month search period to look for a new job as a highly skilled migrant, regardless of whether the employment was terminated by the employer or whether it was the employee who decided to quit. Before this new policy, a search period was only granted if the employer had initiated the termination of the employment contract. The IND will revoke the highly skilled migrant permit if the highly skilled migrant was unable to find a new job with a recognized sponsor within the three month search period. Highly skilled migrants are thus offered more flexibility in switching jobs with this new policy. The search period commences the day on which the employment agreement is terminated. For more information on the policy regarding highly skilled migrants, feel free to contact Marcel Reurs ( ...

On Perilous Migrant Trail, Women Often Become Prey to Sexual Abuse

Niet alleen onderweg maar ook in de asielzoekerscentra worden vrouwen belaagd BERLIN — One Syrian woman who joined the stream of migrants to Germany was forced to pay down her husband’s debt to smugglers by making herself available for sex along the way. Another was beaten unconscious by a Hungarian prison guard after refusing his advances. A third, a former makeup artist, dressed as a boy and stopped washing to ward off the men in her group of refugees. Now in an emergency shelter in Berlin, she still sleeps in her clothes and, like several women here, pushes a cupboard in front of her door at night. “There is no lock or key or anything,” said Esraa al-Horani, the makeup artist and one of the few women here not afraid to give her name. She has been lucky, Ms. Horani said: “I’ve only been beaten and robbed.” War and violence at home, exploitative smugglers and perilous seas along the way, an uncertain welcome and future on a foreign continent — these are...

The year of the migrant / het jaar van de migrant

Afbeelding
From drownings in the Mediterranean to the mass movement of people across Europe's borders, 2015 was the year the migrant crisis dominated the headlines. Here we look back on that year T his was the year a million people mired in violence and poverty stopped waiting for help from the rich world, and instead set off to make a new life there. Europe was unprepared and largely unwilling to accept them and, challenged to live up to its lofty ideals, much of the planet’s wealthiest continent responded with fear, anger and efforts to move the new arrivals on or keep them out entirely. Thousands of people risked their lives almost every day to reach Europe, just as the stability and freedom they sought there were shaken by recrimination between neighbouring states, terror attacks, and a rush to rebuild border fences. As with the 2008 financial crash, and subsequent travai...

5 euro! Kijk hier hier Samenvatting Auteur: Khadija Arib Uitgever: Balans, Uitgeverij Nederlands 246 pagina's Balans, Uitgeverij januari 2012 Alle prod...
