Workshop: Citizenship of children of immigrants – Legal status and life opportunities in host country societies

Afbeelding
Date/Time Date(s) - 26/06/20 All Day Location UM Categories No Categories This workshop brings together researchers from various backgrounds to discuss ongoing research on how legal status affects the life opportunities of children of immigrants in Western countries. While access to citizenship for immigrants has been increasingly restricted or questioned in host societies over the last decades, little is known about whether and how children of immigrants get access to the citizenship of their country of birth and/or of residence, and how this may impact their life chances and outcomes. Legal status is not only relevant for children of the so-called “1.5 generation”, who do not obtain citizenship based on ius soli , but also for native-born children of immigrants living in countries with a ius sanguinis tradition. If they do not become citizens at birth, children of immigrants typically rely on their parents to acquire the host country citizenship, raising the ...

Over de grens: Nederland's tolerante houding ten aanzien van immigranten beschreven in de New York Times

In de New York Times staat een artikel over Geert Wilders. Hem nu even geheel buiten beschouwing gelaten is het leuk om Nederland zo beschreven te zien: "The Netherlands , one of Europe’s most socially liberal countries, with a centuries-long tradition of promoting religious tolerance and welcoming immigrants." "Yet immigrants are costly for the Dutch since the country has a generous social welfare system and pays for newcomers’ education, health care, housing and food. “So if certain groups come and do not speak Dutch and do not share our values, if they don’t integrate, it’s a bigger problem,” he said. The Netherlands, with its religious tolerance and relative prosperity — unemployment is among the lowest in Europe — may seem an unlikely place for the far right to take hold." https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/27/world/europe/geert-wilders-reclusive-provocateur-rises-before-dutch-vote.html?smid=tw-nytimes&smtyp=cur&_r=0   Wel...

"Immigrant mums: The importance of parent involvement for student success" door Wytzia Raspe

For my course in teaching I have to write essays every fortnight. This is essay no 2 All illustrations are sheets from the course Foundations of Teaching for Learning 8: Developing Relationships by the Commonwealth Education Trust https://www.coursera.org/learn/teacher-relationships/home/week/4 Introduction Normally I teach about immigration and immigration law to grown-up students so the part of the course about the relationship between the teacher and the pupil's parents did seem not that useful for me. However I realised that our Dutch society has now many families in which one or even two of the parents are immigrants. The mum's mostly raise their young children but have not mastered Dutch themselves so what they do is they teach their children their own native language and then wait for the school to teach them proper Dutch. This can result in a huge learning disadvantage for children. Another aspect is that especially ref...

Three ways of "positive thinking about immigrants" (Heeft migratie een positief of een negatief effect op het gastland?)

The flow of typically young refugees and migrants can offset Europe’s negative demographic trends. Migrants work in jobs spurned by local people. For welfare systems, the arrival of migrants and refugees who regularly participate in the labor market and contribute to the financing of welfare can be an important source of liquidity for recipient countries.

Een ander geluid over Somaliers: 100 Years After Somalis Arrive in London, It’s High Time to Learn About Them (maar er is ook een Amsterdam versie)

October 16, 2014   by Anya Ahmed   Open Society Initiative for Europe   1 comment 100 Years After Somalis Arrive in London, It’s High Time to Learn About Them There has been a Somali presence in London for over a hundred years. The first Somalis to arrive in Britain were economic migrants. Merchant seamen settled in cities including Cardiff, Liverpool, and London. There are records of British Somalis in London dating back to 1914 when they were recruited to fight in the First World War and then subsequently settled there. In the 1990s civil war in Somali forced another wave of migration to Britain. Today, Somalis are one of the most misunderstood groups in the United Kingdom,...

“PATHWAYS TO POWER: THE POLITICAL REPRESENTATION OF CITIZENS OF IMMIGRANT ORIGIN IN SEVEN EUROPEAN DEMOCRACIES”

Our project — “PATHWAYS TO POWER: THE POLITICAL REPRESENTATION OF CITIZENS OF IMMIGRANT ORIGIN IN SEVEN EUROPEAN DEMOCRACIES” — is a cooperative international endeavor on the political representation of citizens of immigrant origin in seven European Democracies. Over the past decades, European societies have grown increasingly ethnically diverse. Immigration is one of the most important challenges facing Europe today. Social and political participation constitutes the ultimate expression of integration in society. Our project seeks to advance knowledge on descriptive representation of citizens of immigrant origin at the national and regional levels over a twenty year period. Additionally, the project adds an innovative dimension by examining substantive representation of citizens of immigrant origin at the national level. We examine participation patterns in France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, and United Kingdom. Our team includes over 20 scholars, wo...

Immigrants win one third of U.S. Nobel prizes in key fields

By Sarah McBride SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - More than one-third of U.S. Nobel prize winners in chemistry, medicine and physics are immigrants, a new report shows. The report, released Thursday by the National Foundation for American Policy, a conservative research group, shows that since 2000, two dozen immigrants won Nobels in those fields, out of 68 U.S. prizewinners in chemistry, medicine and physics. The NFAP hopes the research shows the contributions of immigrants in important fields will bolster the chances for the passage of immigration reform, which has been mired in Congress this term.  So do not run that risk!   Harrowing underwater footage of the migrant ship that sunk killing more than 300 last autumn has emerged, following another tragic shipwreck off the coast of Lampedusa. As police divers explore the sunken wreck, the bodies of those that did not survive can be seen on board and scattered on the surrounding sea bed . In one heartbreaking image a young couple had remained in a loving embrace even as they drowned. Tackling Brain Waste Among Immigrant Professionals: Initiatives to Improve the Recognition of Foreign Qualifications

Immigration and the circulation of skilled professionals has become a major source of human capital in the United States and across the advanced industrialized world. Despite this reality, internationally mobile workers are often unable to put their skills and experience obtained abroad to good use . The resulting waste of human capital represents a loss to employers, destination economies, and immigrants themselves.  This event will bring together experts and policymakers from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss what governments can do to improve the recognition of foreign credentials — particularly in regulated occupations where time-consuming and expensive licensing processes can substantially delay access to skilled employment. The discussion will highlight promising practices from abroad, asking what US policymakers can learn from European innovations in qualifications recognition and how international cooperation can help — both across the Atlantic and f...

"The illegal immigrants Britain CAN'T kick out" Artikel in the Daily Mail

Afbeelding
Ibrahim Vajzovic sits behind a large wooden desk at First Bosnian Insurance Agency, the company he started in St. Louis eight years ago, and talks about the values of education and hard work. It’s one of three businesses he owns, in addition to teaching a course at Webster University, a liberal arts college in Webster Groves. Vajzovic, 53, who came to the U.S. in 1994 as a war refugee from Bosnia, is the portrait of a striving, successful immigrant that business leaders would like to see replicated, by the thousands. They say nothing short of St. Louis (USCUSTLO)’s survival as a major American city is at stake. Bridge programs helping skilled immigrants find jobs in their profession

English: Government Conference Centre (formely Ottawa Union Station), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) By  Graham Lanktree Immigrants with skilled professions who came to Canada used to make due finding a job in their field on their own, but Ontario is making it easier with a new $57 million investment in programs to help them out. “I had my own company back in Iran,” said Abbas Mokabbery, an IT professional who came to Canada in 2008. “You grow your roots little by little, but coming to Canada was like moving that tree from one garden to a different land.” One thing that struck him on arriving, he said, was how different the work environment is. “People are very serious about their work. Some people are not so serious about their work in Iran.” To help himself adjust, Mokabbery enrolled in an Ontario bridge program with the Information and Communications Technology Council where he could get work experience in his field of geomat...

Illegal immigrants who have passed the bar want to practice (Doet aan onze vraag of mensen mogen stage lopen denken)

In Nederland speelt de vraag of mensen mogen stage lopen. In America gaan ze een stapje verder: Illegal immigrants who have passed the bar want to practice Judges in several states are preparing to answer the latest question in the complex world of immigration: Can an illegal immigrant legally practice law in the USA? Law school graduate Sergio Garcia has passed the California state bar exam but has been prevented from practicing law because his family entered the country illegally. Illegal immigrants brought to the USA as children, and who later graduated law schools in California, Florida and New York, are trying to gain entry to their state bars so they can work as attorneys. Sergio Garcia's family illegally crossed into the USA from Mexico when he was 17 months old, and he went on to graduate from Chico State University and Cal Northern School of Law. He took the state bar exam in July 2009 and passed it but was told he could not join the state bar — a stand...

Blame Legal Immigrants Like Me for Taking Your American Jobs

I am probably the only immigrant willing to admit that we are to blame for America's high unemployment. But it is not undocumented immigrants like the ones whose children President Barack Obama said he's not going to deport who are taking your jobs away. Believe me, you don't want the jobs those immigrants do. It's legal immigrants like me you should be blaming for your plight. Soon after I arrived from Kenya nearly 20 years ago, I began to work in the kind of jobs you'd expect a new immigrant to take. I scrubbed pots and pans, floors, and toilets at various restaurants. I stocked supermarket shelves. I guarded buildings and parking structures. And I scrubbed pots and pans, floors and toilets again. Unsatisfied, I registered with a temporary staffing agency in California's Silicon Valley. Because I had no experience, the only jobs they could give me lasted between a couple of weeks and three months. But they all added up and gave me the experie...
