SCOTLAND's lucrative west coast fishing fleet is on the brink of collapse due to a "crazy" immigration law which effectively prohibits non-European nationals from fishing on local boats, it has been warned. The Clyde Fishermen's Association has revealed that 20 of 65 members' boats have gone under in the last year and a half because they cannot recruit internationally. Now the CFA is warning there is an expectation that another six boats may go out of business in Campbeltown very shortly – which would cut membership by almost half. The CFA say the issues extend to the entire west coast, with boats also tied up on Barra because they cannot get crew to man them. (....) It is estimated that nearly one in five of the 8000 crew on the Scottish fishing fleet are non-EEA workers, with a further 400 from within the EEA. Most use a transit visa to enter the UK, which allows them to work on vessels fishing more than 12 nautical miles off the UK coastline. ...

Deze twee weken is het Refugee Festival in Schotland. In Glasgow ben ik naar twee workshops geweest. Eentje ging over onderzoek door studenten en wetenschappers bij Meryhill Integration Network. Penar and Gianluca die voor die organisatie werken hebben een gedragscode voor onderzoekers opgesteld. Kwetsbare groepen als vluchtelingen en illegalen zijn immers mensen die soms tegen het enthousiasme van een onderzoeker moeten worden beschermd.  Ook vergeten onderzoekers soms hun resultaten terug te koppelen waardoor een organisatie er niet veel aan heeft te hebben meegewerkt. Penar en Gianluca bevelen ook aan dat studenten en promovendi in hun eindrapport de organisatie via wie het onderzoek is gedaan als partner vermelden. Verder veel over onderzoek doen doorgepraat. Denk aan valkuilen als het naar het gewenste resultaat toepraten. Die in de morgen gebruikte het Kelso viltsysteem om met een groep over integratie in Glasgow te praten. During Scottish Refugee Week 2017 Bob and I visited an event in Kelvingrove Museum and art gallery. It was all about integration of communities. And the whole event was really a mix of all cultures living in the area. Here a guy originally from Iran and a Scottish lassie dance on her and his ancestral traditional music and some from the countries on the map in between Iran and Scotland. (If I remember correctly). Voor diegenen die zich afvroegen waarom er maar niets nieuws werd geplaatst: ik was heerlijk een weekje uit logeren bij mijn vrienden in Schotland. Er is een Refugee Week met veel lezingen en activiteiten in Glasgow  http://refugeeweek.org.uk/in-your-area/scotland/ maar in Dumfries and Galloway waren de enige mensen die niet van de Vikingen afstamden het Indiase echtpaar in de kerk. Edinburg - het kasteel Maar toen onze boottocht langs de kust werd afgeblazen en we daarom maar een dagje naar het Lakedistrict in naburing Engeland gingen leken we wel ergens in de Golf beland. Grote groepen zwaar gesluierde Arabische dames die duidelijk geld hadden en met hun gezinnen er op vakantie waren. Nou......maar eens gaan kijken wat er in de tussentijd op ons vakgebied is gebeurd. Serguei Serykh leapt to his death with his wife and stepson The head of a leading charity has accused the Government of deliberately ignoring an epidemic of poor mental health among asylum seekers, because admitting it would mean allowing greater numbers to stay in the country. Lesley Benzie, chief executive of Lifelink, was speaking a week after three Russian asylum seekers leapt to their deaths from a tower block in Glasgow’s Red Road. Ms Benzie fears the level of desperation among asylum seekers in Glasgow is such that services would be overwhelmed if the problem was acknowledged. Life Link was set up in 1992 to tackle suicide rates in North Glasgow, after they were found to be 70% higher than the national average. Ms Benzie said increasing numbers of asylum seekers were contacting the charity.
