 On Friday 27 November 2015, the Research Unit in Law at the University of Luxembourg will be holding a conference on ‘Frontex: legal questions and current controversies’. The conference will examine various legal issues concerning the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union (Frontex) and its activities. Sarkas Rani, a 36-year-old Syrian was quoted on Sunday by Italian daily La Repubblica as saying he was contacted in Turkey by human traffickers who had posted notices on Facebook offering clandestine passage to Europe for $5,000 for individuals, or $4,500 per person in groups of 25 or more. "They promised me $15,000 and the possibility of sending my entire family over," Rani was quoted as saying by La Repubblica, which used transcripts of a police interrogation after the Syrian was arrested December 31 in the Italian port of Gallipoli. The Blue Sky M was intercepted Wednesday by Italian authorities as it was locked on a course towards Italy's coast with 768 migrants aboard. According to La Repubblica, Rani acknowledged having left the bridge to hide among the migrant passengers once he had set the ship's autopilot toward Italy's southern shore. Door het ontbreken van grensbewaking aan de Europese binnengrenzen is de bewaking van de Europese buitengrenzen veel belangrijker geworden Ongeveer 44.000 kilometer aan zeegrens en bijna 9.000 kilometer aan landgrens moeten worden bewaakt tegen illegale migratie. Lampedusa's overcrowded refugee camps made headlines last year. Those facilities may have mostly emptied since, but Amnesty International says the EU's refugee policy still has major faults. In recent days, London-based human rights organization Amnesty International has worked to draw attention to the fate of North African refugees struggling to reach Europe by boat. Many of them arrive on the tiny Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, which belongs to Italy. Other refugees end up in Sicily or Malta. This summer has seen a decrease in the number of refugees from North Africa. But Nicolas Berger, Director of Amnesty International's European Institutions Office, told DW the fundamental problem has not changed. DW: Mr. Berger, you just visited Lampedusa. Illegale immigratie (uittreksel uit de geannoteerde agenda) In vervolg op de bespreking van juni, zal illegale immigratie - in het bijzonder de preventie en bestrijding van illegale immigratie aan de zuidelijke zeegrenzen van de EU- door de ER worden besproken. De Europese Commissie zal tijdens de Europese Raad verslag doen van de voorstellen die sinds de ER in juni zijn gedaan. Aan de orde zullen komen het gemeenschappelijk Europees asielsysteem, de versterking van Frontex, de totstandkoming van gemeenschappelijke "rules of engagement" voor Frontex-operaties, de "Global Approach to Migration" en samenwerking met derdelanden op het gebied van migratie.
