Conference Oracle of Amsterdam - How can the stories of refugees be a part of the cultural heritage of the European cities?

Life stories of refugees and their cultural participation in European cities How can the stories of refugees be a part of the cultural heritage of the European cities? In which ways can these stories be presented to a broader audiences? Why is cultural participation of refugees important? These are the central questions of the Oracle of Amsterdam, a sharing and inspiring closure of the European project Specially Unknown. At this conference we want to motivate and stimulate people to think, dream and create possible, probable and preferable scenarios on the role of the life stories of refugees for cultural heritage, art productions and cultural participation in European cities. The workshops are meant to create different scenarios on the main three topics of the conference:  interviews, artistic productions, and Delphi research. Some examples of the workshops themes:

There will be in total two rounds of 9 parallel workshops.

Each workshop is either a group of dreamers, or of thinkers, or of doers. Each group discusses a given topic and makes a scenario  – either a probable, or a possible, or a desirable one.

Closing Plenary (16 -17h)

At the closing plenary the participants will find themselves again in the temporary oracle space, where the scenarios created during the workshops will be brought together and presented.

They will form a basis for a brief discussion: several ideas from the presented scenarios will be selected and the participants will be invited to react and give their opinions about them.

On Friday 23 November 2018 the Institute of Immigration Law and the Department of Child Law (both Leiden University) will organize an international conference on ‘Safeguarding children’s rights in immigration law’ at Leiden Law School.


Millions of children are on the move worldwide. Children are fleeing conflicts and wars and move with or without their parents to attain a better future. Throughout the migration process, children find themselves in a vulnerable position. The entry into force of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child has accelerated the proliferation of children’s rights worldwide. Also within immigration law, the idea that children deserve specific protection has become commonplace. However, in times of the securitization of migration control, the danger exists that the best interests of the child are not a primary consideration for governments and policy makers at international and domestic levels. To address the challenge of safeguarding children’s rights in immigration law, we convene this conference.
Confirmed speakers in the plenary sessions are Dr. Bina D’Costa (Australian National University, ANU College of Asia and the Pacific), Dr. Jason Pobjoy (Blackstone Chambers; Refugee Studies Centre, University of Oxford), Prof. Peter Rodrigues (Leiden University), Mr. Tomáš Boček (Special Representative on Migration and Refugees, Council of Europe) and Mr. George Moschos (Deputy Ombudsman Children’s Rights in Greece).
In the afternoon, various aspects of immigration law and the protection of children’s rights therein will be discussed in parallel workshops.

Symposium 30 mei: Turkey and the European Union: Common Interests or Divergent Paths?

Turkey has been a candidate to join the EU since 1999 and negotiating accession to the Union since 2005. Relations have been re-energized recently over the refugee deal. The seminar will host speakers from academia and civil society with extensive expertise on EU and Turkey relations. The aim of the seminar, jointly organized by IKV - Economic Development Foundation Turkey and ACELG, is to contribute to debates about the current state of Turkey’s EU perspective. Attendance is free, registration is required.

Background and aim

The negotiations on Turkey's accession to the European Union have still not been concluded due to problems related to the Cyprus conflict, the EU’s enlargement fatigue and slowdown of EU-induced reforms in Turkey. Relations have been re-energized recently over the refugee deal agreed between the two sides which concern the readmission of irregular migrants by Turkey and increased EU assistance for Syrian refugees residing in the country. The visa liberalisation process for Turkish citizens has been accelerated with a view to a June 2016 target date which induced far-reaching reforms in the country in order to fulfil the 72 criteria stipulated in the visa liberalisation roadmap. Turkey’s EU membership perspective, however, still remains uncertain due to the slow pace of accession negotiations, political problems in Turkey and the EU’s ambiguous approach to Turkey’s European vocation. The seminar will host speakers from academia and civil society with extensive expertise on EU and Turkey relations. The aim of the seminar is to contribute to debates about the current state of Turkey’s EU perspective with an emphasis on the accession process and association regime as well as ongoing areas of cooperation between the two sides, i.e. the updating of the customs union, agreement on refugee action plan and visa liberalisation process.

Conferentie: ’Frontex: Legal Questions and Current Controversies’

 On Friday 27 November 2015, the Research Unit in Law at the University of Luxembourg will be holding a conference on ‘Frontex: legal questions and current controversies’. The conference will examine various legal issues concerning the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union (Frontex) and its activities. The conference will bring together academics and practitioners from EU and international law backgrounds. Call for Papers: Regulating ‘Irregular’ Migration

The Faculty of Law, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens organises a conference titled ‘Regulating ‘irregular’ migration: International Obligations and International Responsibilities’. The conference will be held on 20 March 2015 in Athens.
The conference aims to address the contemporary phenomenon of ‘irregular migration’ against the background of international law, including the law of international responsibilities. Special emphasis will be placed on the measures that states and international organisations undertake in order to control ‘irregular migration’, the respective obligations of states and the responsibility issues that may arise.
The keynote speech will be delivered by Professor Guy Goodwin-Gill (University of Oxford). Early-career researchers in the field of legal regulation of migration, including PhD students, are invited to present their work in progress. Abstracts of papers (not exceeding 300 words) should be addressed by 15 January 2015 to the conference convenors.

The Stockholm Programme and the “EU agenda for better responsibility-sharing and more mutual trust” both aim to create common rules in the area of asylum law so as to increase mutual trust between Member States. After landmark judgments such as MSS v Belgium and Greece in the Strasbourg court and NS and ME in the Luxembourg court, the foundations of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) appeared to be shaken. The recently agreed legislative reform of the CEAS is a chance to repair damage to mutual trust and solidarity and improve EU-wide asylum policies. This conference will focus on the new legislative rules and will assess whether the second phase CEAS can achieve the objective of ensuring common standards in all Member States, based on a high level of protection.

This expert conference breaks new ground in exploring how human rights law (HRL) is shaping the protection of refugees worldwide. A high-level event, it brings together exciting new contributions from more than twenty-five leading international specialists in the refugee protection and HRL - including experts from UNHCR - to take stock of transnational developments in law and practice over the past twenty years, and to cultivate new approaches to the topic. The five thematic panels of the conference move beyond abstract approaches to HRL and refugee law to assessing legal interaction between the two fields in practice. The first day offers wide-ranging comparative perspectives on how HRL is impacting on refugee law in national settings across the world. The second half-day explores the novel ways in which the borders of refugee protection are being shaped by cross-cutting special themes in HRL and the future challenges that this poses. Substantial opportunities are provided for participants to join in debating and forging new approaches to the themes canvassed by this unique gathering.

Conferentie "Liberal Answers to Modern Migration and Integration Issues in Western Europe"

13 okt 2012 om 10:30 in Carlton Beach Hotel, Den Haag

Op zaterdag 13 oktober 2012 organiseert VVD Internationaal een conferentie over immigratie en integratie.
Deze conferentie vindt plaats in de Carlton Beachclub in Scheveningen en begint om 11:00 uur (inloop vanaf 10:30 uur). Na afloop (rond 16:15 uur) is er de mogelijkheid om nog even na te praten onder het genot van een hapje en een drankje.

Frits Bolkestein, Hans van Baalen, Cora van Nieuwenhuizen en Minister Uri Rosenthal zullen onder andere een bijdrage leveren aan het debat over immigratie en integratie. De voertaal tijdens de debatten is Engels.

Deze conferentie wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door het European Liberal Forum. Zij bieden u ook de lunch aan.

De aanmelding gaat bijzonder publieksonvriendelijk. Zelfs voor een VVD-lid als ikzelf. Ik moet gegevens verstrekken zodat kan nagekeken worden of ik wel lid ben. Het lijkt er daarom op dat het alleen voor leden is. Wellicht is dat puur om geen schaduwaanmeldingen te krijgen. Conference: Access Denied

Irregular immigrants and persons with weak immigration status are often excluded from the formal social security arrangements in their countries of work and residence. This raises a growing number of legal, practical and political issues. This conference seeks to analyse these issues and bring together academics, policy advisers, practitioners, international organisations, NGO’s and representatives of migrant interest groups to explore alternative approaches to social protection and migration.

Conference goals
To present the research findings of the Cross-border Welfare research group.
To initiate further research on alternative approaches to social protection and migration.

Following the closing plenary on Wednesday March 14 there will be a post-conference afternoon working session for participants who have committed to the proposal for follow-up research.

Conference publication
Participants will receive a conference publication including the research findings of the Cross-border welfare group, a selection of the conference papers and an annotated bibliography.
