Internal dIsplacement and the global compact on refugees Are today’s returning refugees tomorrow’s IDPs?

More than 550,000 refugees made the arduous journey back to  their  countries  of  origin  in  2016,  mainly  to  Afghanistan,  Somalia  and  Sudan.  For  many  returnees,  however,  repatriation  carries  the  risk  of  de  facto  internal  displacement  (if  they are unable to go back to their place of origin or sustainably integrate elsewhere) or secondary displacement (if they are forced to uproot their lives again). This demands a more holistic approach to durable solutions that integrates planning and policy for internally displaced people (IDPs) with that for returning refugees to mitigate the risk of people being caught up in secondary, multiple or pendular movements. Uit Somalische krant: Amnesty Criticises Netherlands for deporting refugees to dangerous zones

Afbeelding
Amnesty International has criticised authorities in the Netherlands for continuing to forcefully deport failed Somali asylum seekers to dangerous zones controlled by al-Shabaab militants. In a report published by the organisation, Netherlands has been accused of sending back the deportees to areas still under the control of extremist militants which can end up them facing ”death penalties”. “By sending Somalis to volatile areas where their lives are in danger, the Dutch government is also responsible for the human rights abuses they face on their return,’’ read the report. Meanwhile, it has called on governments such as Norway, Denmark, United Kingdom, Sweden and Saudi Arabia to end their policy of returning Somalis to south and central Somalia. It cited an example as one of the deportees, Ahmed Said who was returned to Mogadishu and three days later was injured in an explosion. Human rights and advocacy groups have voiced their concerns on deportation of Somalis...

Somaliër betreurt beslissing om illegale reis van zijn broer naar Europa te financieren. Nu alles kwijt

Failed Migrant’s Journey to Europe Echoes in Africa Mustaf Hussein Abukar. Heidi Vogt/The Wall Street Journal MOGADISHU, Somalia— Mustaf Hussein Abukar wanted a better life for his younger brother, in Europe. Instead, he got an encounter with a human-smuggling racket that nearly bankrupted his family, a common story in this East African nation and across the continent. Two years ago, Mustaf Abukar sold his father’s farm to help pay his brother’s smugglers in the hope his sibling might prosper in Europe. But German security forces caught the brother, Hashim, trying to sneak into the country, and he has been stuck in immigration limbo for the past year. Now without land or savings, Mustaf says he is near destitution. He thinks about what Hashim could have done with the money they spent, such as starting a business in Mogadishu to sell mobile phone credit. “I regret it,” Mustaf Abukar said. “Really, it was a big mistake.”

Gay Somali refugees face death threats Gay, lesbian and HIV-infected refugees fear violent persecution should they return home.

UN officials have claimed that Somalia is safe and requires its citizens to help with the reconstruction process [EPA] Nairobi, Kenya - Gay, lesbian and HIV-infected refugees from Somalia are facing persecution - and even the threat of death - should they return home. Refugees have been under pressure to leave accommodations in Kenya, where many also face racist discrimination, after claims the country is now significantly safer than when Al-Shabaab had control of Mogadishu. But many gay Somalis say returning is not an option for them. "Warlords have made Somalia a death chamber for gays and lesbians," said Jamal, a Somali journalist. "It is against international law to force such groups back to Somalia, given the risks." 'It will be a massacre' Top UN officials, among them Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, have claimed, however, that the country is safe and requires its citizens to help with the reconstruction proc...

Last Word: A return to Mogadishu

The plane came to land practically in the middle of nowhere. The runway was dilapidated. The bushes around were thick. The once-calm atmosphere inside the cabin quickly turned chaotic. Everyone was on their feet, frantically scrambling about for their luggage. We got off last, part of a column of grim-faced passengers, eager to escape the claustrophobic contraption that had delivered us to Somalia. The first time I flew into Mogadishu was on September 10, 1997. I was nine and it was the height of the civil war. One cool morning, my mother upped with me and my seven young siblings and moved us out of our home in Nairobi. It was my mother's decision and she never tried to romanticise it to us. No fuss. No drama. No wahala, as they say in Nigeria, just a sense of excitement and adventure at something new. Years later, my mum would call it her destination of choice "for a new...

The 'Angel of Mogadishu' who raised a hospital from the ruins of war

Afbeelding
Reopening the San Martino hospital in the Somali capital Mogadishu has been a largely thankless task for Dr Aisha Omar Ahmed. Instead of earning a tidy living as a consultant obstetrician in Europe, the hospital director has been working mostly unpaid and in appalling conditions. Since quitting her medical career in Rome to return home to a city and country at war, the 44-year-old has been threatened, beaten and shot at. So far she has chosen to stay. "I was watching Somalia for 20 years in the headlines. I saw the [wounded] children brought to Italy for treatment. I was always thinking about this country," she says. The San Martino is barely recognisable as a hospital. A cluster of wind-blown Italianate ruins overlooking the Indian Ocean near the old port, it has long since been overrun by squatters fleeing the destruction elsewhere in the capital. The wards and operating theatres, laundry and clinic have been variously shelled, occupied or looted. The new residents at...

Ze zijn uitgeprocedeerd. Snelle uitzetting Volgens de rechtbank in Groningen was de detentie onterecht, omdat illegalen alleen gevangen mogen worden gehouden als zij snel kunnen worden uitgezet. Female genital mutilation The incidence of FGM in Somalia is universally agreed to be over 90%. The predominant type of FGM is “pharaonic”, categorised by the  World Health Organisation as  Type III . The societal requirement for any girl or woman to undergo FGM is strong. In general, an uncircumcised, unmarried Somali woman, up to the age of 39, will be at real risk of suffering FGM. The risk will be greatest in cases where both parents are in favour of FGM. Where both are opposed, the question of whether the risk will reach the requisite level will need to be determined by reference to the extent to which the parents are likely to be able to withstand the strong societal pressures. Unless the parents are from a socio-economic background that is likely to distance them from mainstream social attitudes, or there is some other particular feature of their case, parental opposition itself may well as a general matter be incapable of eliminating the real risk to the daughter that...
