Asielzoeker die niet of onvoldoende de taal machtig is van het land waaruit hij claimt te komen wordt gezien als 'een leugenaar' Asielaanvragen afgewezen op grond van foutief oordeel over taal Jan Blommaert wint prijs met taalkundige reconstructie van afwijzing asielaanvraag, zo meldt de Universiteit van Tilburg zojuist. Jan Blommaert is taalkundig antropoloog aan de Universiteit van Tilburg en heeft de Barbara Metzger Price gewonnen met een artikel in Current Anthropology. Het artikel reconstrueert het lot van een asielzoeker uit Rwanda. Blommaert toont aan dat de afwijzing van zijn asielaanvraag een foutief oordeel over taal ten grondslag ligt. In het artikel Language, Asylum and the National Order laat Blommaert zien hoe een asielaanvraag van de Rwandese asielzoeker Joseph Mutingira wordt afgewezen door het Britse Home Office door verkeerde aannames over taal.
