In Jordan, 80 per cent of the Syrian refugees live in host communities across the Kingdom, mostly concentrated in urban areas, according to official figures. This is due to a perception that cities ...

Jordan Times "Group discussion tackles labels ‘in a world of migration’

Some 75 participants take part in a collaborative discussion on labelling and bias in identity definition at Jadal for Knowledge and Culture in Amman on Wednesday (Photo by Hani Obaidat) AMMAN — “How to deal with labels and questioning self-identity in a world of globalisation and migration?” asked the participants at a group discussion held at Jadal for Knowledge and Culture by the online media project Hybris Media on Wednesday. Jordan, which has welcomed 19,299 resettlement departures in 2016, hosts one of the largest refugee populations in the world, half of which is under 18 years old, according to the latest UNHCR figures.   Based on that finding, a collaborative community discussion was organised to find solutions to the issue of bias and labelling that comes with refugees’ integration in society.   “As we see people from different cultural backgrounds constan...

One of the best novels I read in a long time! "Shepherds use religion to fight; sheep fight over religion" . It is one of the great quotes in the novel written by Dutch historian Piet Hein Wokk e (3 June 1985) who studied history in Groningen, focusing on contemporary conflicts and Middle Eastern history. Even when the book is set in a fictitious country called Beledar situated between Jordan and Iraq, the novel sheds light on many real things regarding the region while telling a captivating story in the meantime: What is the difference between the Sunni and...

Jordan's Azraq Syrian refugee camp stands largely empty

Scalding temperatures, a lack of electricity and soaring food prices have created harsh conditions in the desert camp. Alisa Reznick | 01 Jun 2015 09:30 GMT | Humanitarian crises , Middle East , Refugees , Jordan , Syria Along a 15km stretch of rocky desert in northern Jordan, in what used to be a camp for displaced Iraqis and Kuwaitis during the first Gulf War, rows of white metal shelters now make up the Azraq camp for Syrian refugees. Azraq opened in April 2014 with the capacity to house up to 130,000 refugees. Back then, the Jordanian government and the United Nations said it would likely become one of the world's most populous refugee camps - b ut one year on, it is nearly empty, with a population of around 18,500. Residents say scalding summer temperatures, a lack of electricity and soaring food prices have created harsh conditions inside the desert camp. Despite major funding rollbacks by international aid agencies, most of Jordan's...

Syrian war refugees find crowds, crime, contagion at camps

With a population of more than 100,000, Zaatari is one of the largest refugee camps in the world and the fourth-largest population center in Jordan , a fact that prompts Mr. Kleinschmidt to half-jokingly describe himself as “international mayor of Zaatari .” A U.N. report over the summer said the camp was “lawless in many ways” and found it to be plagued by an organized crime network, a claim denied by Jordanian officials. “The overall challenge has been security, the relationship between the refugees, police and ourselves,” Read more: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/nov/5/syrian-war-refugees-find-crowds-crime-contagion-at/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&utm_medium=RSS#ixzz2juycK1dm In verband met geldwolven die denken geld te kunnen claimen op krantenartikelen die op een blog als deze worden geplaatst maar na meestal een dag voor de krantenlezers aan leeswaardigheid hebben ingeboet terwijl wij vreemdelingenrecht specialisten ze soms wel nog jaren gebruiken o...

Dutch immigration news in English (summary of posts of today)

To summarize the blogs I posted today: According to the Dutch courts: - Refused asylumseekers from Iraq can be deported to Jordan if Jordan agrees to take them back; - Algerian authorities do grant a laissez passer to their nationals who are illegal in The Netherlands as long as they declare to be willing to go back. The court states that that declaration can demanded from such illegal aliens; - Some Oeigoers lost their case against deportation to China. The highest administrative court did not follow their lawyers that the sole fact that they had been abroad for a long period would bring their life in danger (artcle 3 ECHR); The Dutch organisation Vluchtelingenwerk (Refugee aid) organises a white umbrella march on World refugee day. In Vrij Nederland (a magazine) an article is publised about the medical plight of illegal aliens in The Netherlands. Requests for a resident permit as a highly qualified migrant are halted for people from Iran due to the political pressure Europ...
