More than 80,000 desperate migrants have fled to Greece to escape persecution, conflict and war, leaving a Government struggling to contain a rapidly growing crisis. Their plight has been highlighted by The Walking Dead actor David Morrissey, who joined the coast guard and helped rescue children from life boats arriving at the island of Lesvos this week. Tens of thousands reach Greek islands by sea, many of them travelling from Syria, with the coast guard rescuing 15 boats a day. Morrissey, an ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) , described the deplorable scenes he witnessed as “the challenge of our age” and urged European leaders to deal with the growing humanitarian crisis by offering “meaningful and credible alternatives” such as resettling migrants. The federal government is seeking to resettle more Syrian refugees but only from the country’s religious minorities, according to sources close to discussions around Canada’s position on refugees from the war-torn nation. Canada has been struggling to meet an earlier commitment from July 2013 to resettle 1,300 Syrians by the end of this year.  Statistics tabled in the House of Commons last week,  showed 457 refugees had arrived  as of mid-November. On Tuesday, the government updated that number to 703. Kevin Menard, a spokesman for the immigration minister wrote CBC News on Friday saying that the numbers are "going up fairly quickly." by JONATHAN WOODROW MARTIN There has recently been some furore here in the UK over the current coalition government’s refusal to take any of the over 2.3 million Syrian refugees fleeing the conflict. Nigel Farage, the leader of a small but growing political party, The United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP), helped fuel the flames by surprisingly (UKIP stands on a broadly anti-immigration platform) calling for Syrian refugees to be given asylum in the UK.  It turned out he only meant a certain type of Syrian, Christians.  Nice. This tale has been disproved this week by the deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, who has confirmed that the UK has in fact taken 1,500 Syrian refugees in the past year, compared to Germany which has taken 20,000 refugees . The coalition claimed before this revelation that its ”generous” giving of over £500 million pounds worth of aid to the ref...

The least Britain can do for Syria's refugees In response to the desperate plight of Syrian  refugees  ( Migration: politics of fear , 31 December) we are writing in support of the Refugee Council's campaign to urge the government  to allow some of them to settle in the UK . We in the Jewish community know only too well the perils of being refugees and the indifference that too often meets their attempt to find sanctuary. Syrians now make up the largest refugee group in the world. It is estimated there are more than 2.2 million, 1 million of whom are children, deeply traumatised by their experiences. We appreciate that this is not a job for Britain alone, but we must do our fair share, and join other European countries who have already pledged to take in Syrian refugees.
