Canada’s new Minister of Immigration is a former Refugee

This is an article from the New Delhi Times http://www.newdelhitimes.com/canadas-new-minister-of-immigration-is-a-former-refugee123/ By Tarek Fatah, Author and Columnist, Canada On Jan. 10, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a decision that made ripples throughout the world. From Singapore to India, to the BBC and beyond, the only news from Canada that made headlines was about Ahmed Hussen, a Somali-born refugee who arrived on our shores in 1993 and rose to become our Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. For spotting talent and lifting a backbencher into the Privy Council, I tip my hat to Trudeau. For hundreds of thousands of African-Canadian boys and girls, Ahmed Hussen’s story is a beacon of hope. (Readers should know Hussen is a close friend, though we disagree on much.) He first came to my attention at the height of Ontario’s historic (and successful) fight rejecting the use of Sharia law in family law arbitration matters in 2004-2005. On one ...

Een ander geluid over Somaliers: 100 Years After Somalis Arrive in London, It’s High Time to Learn About Them (maar er is ook een Amsterdam versie)

October 16, 2014   by Anya Ahmed   Open Society Initiative for Europe   1 comment 100 Years After Somalis Arrive in London, It’s High Time to Learn About Them There has been a Somali presence in London for over a hundred years. The first Somalis to arrive in Britain were economic migrants. Merchant seamen settled in cities including Cardiff, Liverpool, and London. There are records of British Somalis in London dating back to 1914 when they were recruited to fight in the First World War and then subsequently settled there. In the 1990s civil war in Somali forced another wave of migration to Britain. Today, Somalis are one of the most misunderstood groups in the United Kingdom,...

Wat voor uitgeprocedeerde Somaliers die in Kenia verbleven? Kenya: Refugees May Become Citizens Under New Law

REFUGEES in Kenya can apply and be granted citizenship, if a proposed law is passed and adopted. The law being drafted by the Department of Refugee Affairs will replace the Refugee Act of 2006, which the government said has failed to address refugee issues adequately. The bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament before the end of the year. The DRA commissioner Harun Komen said the bill considers granting citizenship to refugees who have stayed in the country for at least five years upon applying. A refugee who marries a Kenyan citizen will also be considered for citizenship, according to the draft bill that is currently under review by stakeholders. Some refugees have lived in Kenya for more than two decades. Komen also said that Kenya is also putting in place a proper national asylum policy which will provide input to the proposed refugee law. "We found that the Refugee Act 2006 had loopholes and we hope the law will address some of those," he said. The n...

Somalian rapist still serving time in Lincoln prison nine years after the end of his sentence

A Somalian prisoner is still serving time inside Lincoln prison nine years after the end of his sentence, inspectors reveal in a damning report today into the overcrowded city-centre Victorian jail. The prisoner, who was sentenced to eight years in prison for rape, completed his sentence in 2002 but was deemed too dangerous to be released prior to his removal from the country. He spent a brief period on bail but was returned in 2008 to the grim prison which holds 50 per cent more prisoners than it should and has high levels of bullying and violence, according to the report. The prison’s inspector said that a second convicted rapist from Iran had spent an extra two years inside the prison after the end of his term. “It seems that for reasons neither man can control, such a return is extremely difficult if not impossible,” according to the report by HM Inspectorate of Prisons. “It cannot be right that they continue to be detained for so long without the authority of...

REFUGEE WOMEN VULNERABLE TO SEXUAL ASSAULT

Afbeelding
Published on 19 July 2012 in  Culture Ahlam Mohsen  (author) According to the U.N., sexual violence is one of the worst global protection challenges and leaves all refugee women at risk of sexual violence. A year and a half after fleeing Eritrea following the murder of her husband, 26-year-old Fatima made her way to Yemen with her one-year-old son. Surviving the dangerous sea voyage, several months in Al Kharaz refugee camp and the journey from Aden to Sana’a, Fatima was living on the streets before an Ethiopian woman took her in. It was there, on 45 Street, that her neighbor, a Yemeni man, raped her. “My son was in the room, crying. That didn’t stop him. I screamed loudly. Someone must have heard me, but no one came.” Vulnerabilities of refugees to sexual violence Refugees—those escaping war, persecution, famine or drought—often experience multiple traumatic events, from the death or separation from loved ones to the physical and often treacherous journey from hom...
