UK judge halts whole deportation flight to Spain

Afbeelding
A senior high court judge has halted a charter flight hours before up to 20 asylum seekers who crossed the Channel to the UK in small boats were due to be forcibly removed to Spain, a country they had previously passed through. The judge, Sir Duncan Ouseley, ordered the flight to be grounded because of concerns that the asylum seekers due to fly might be left destitute in the streets of Madrid, as happened to another group earlier this month. It is thought to be only the second time an entire Home Office charter flight has been grounded by a high court action. UN: Denying asylum based on nationality violates international law

Growing number of asylum seekers remain stranded at borders after being denied refugee claims based on citizenship November 24, 2015 8:53AM ET About 1,000 refugees and migrants are stuck at the main crossing point into Macedonia from Greece as authorities deny entry to some nationalities in contravention of international law, the United Nations said Tuesday. “A new humanitarian situation is developing in Europe that needs urgent attention,” Adrian Edwards of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) told a news briefing. “The new restrictions chiefly involve people being profiled on the basis of their claimed nationalities,” he said. At the borders between Greece and the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia, and between Macedonia and Serbia, nationals of Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq are being allowed to cross. Nationals of other countries are being stopped, leading to a demonstration by about 200 peopl...

Detentie zou weinig invloed hebben op tegengaan illegale immigratie maar vertrouwen in het hebben gehad van een eerlijke kans bevordert terugkeer wel. Een paar citaten: "A lot of governments think that legal advice can bog down a claim, when in fact our research found that early legal advice and intervention reduces the time to complete a case and increases chances of voluntary return.” "If people feel they’ve been taken care of and their case has been properly scrutinized, they’re more likely to accept the outcome." Alternatives to immigration detention prove cheaper, more humane  JOHANNESBURG, 30 August 2013 (IRIN) - Countries around the world are increasingly responding to influxes of irregular migrants and asylum seekers by simply locking them up. States cite national security concerns and suggest that such punitive measures will make undocumented migrants and asylum seekers think twice before entering their territory. Increasing number of asylum detainees freed after near-fatal hunger strikes

An increasing number of asylum seekers are being released from detention after almost starving themselves to death, the Guardian has learned. On Monday alone, four men were freed from Harmondsworth immigration removal centre after refusing food for weeks, according to sources both inside the centre and at the Home Office. As many as 17 inmates were on hunger strike at the centre last month, the Harmondsworth source said. Security staff say they are placed in an impossible situation as more detainees refuse food as a means of obtaining their release. "We do not want detainees to die, but releasing them may encourage other detainees to go on hunger strike. It is a lose-lose situation," said the Harmondsworth source, who asked not to be named for fear of losing their job.
