Immigration (asylum) and legal aid in The Netherlands - mr Raspe

(This is a work-in-progress document. It has been years since I had to bill at a lawfirm and had to look the amounts up online so if I wrote down things incorrectly please add a comment stating what has to be changed and I can take care of that) When an asylum-seeker arrives in The Netherlands and declares he (or she) wants to seek asylum he will be moved to a special center where his case will be processed. Every asylumseeker is given a lawyer without having to pay for that lawyer. This has been standing practice for many many years in The Netherlands predating the Proceduredirective. He will also be able to ask assistance from a charity that helps asylumseekers, called Vluchtelingenwerk, as that has an office in all the asylumcenters ( http://www.vluchtelingenwerk.nl/english ). And when he is informed that his request is rejected and his appeal (most of them will try till the last resort) there will be all kind of charities (funded by the government and private f...

Fahamu: Pro bono Legal Aid And Other Refugee Services

Below are non-government organisations (NGOs) or not-for-profit organisations (and, in rare cases, individual lawyers) who offer pro bono legal aid and/or other services related to the needs of refugees. Some countries have no legal aid for refugees but do have NGOs that provide other services that can be valuable for refugees and might lead to legal aid. These listings has been provided by the organization or an individual, or occasionally obtained from a website. Every effort is made to list only bona fide organizations and to ensure accuracy, but we cannot assume responsibility for errors or quality of services. Please email info[at]fahamu.org to correct or suggest listings.   Go here to countylist (as it is a table that won 't work on Blogger) Adapted from the UN World Macro Regions. Those who experience violations of the Nairobi Code in the services provided by an organization, or otherwise experience serious problems with its services as they a...

1) Not-for-profit organisations should be clear about their main aim: to provide services to those denied access to justice by the lack of legal aid. They should make it clear that any ABS they have created is independent of their free provision, and they are not speculatively exploring new markets at the expense of their neediest clients 2) The 'for profit' legal profession should recognise that while lawyers have no equivalent of doctors' Hippocratic Oath, the law is more than simply a tool or trade: it is a glue that binds society. A proactive commitment, in one form or another, to make sure ever...
